Project #02 | Nomitzi
Concept and Design – Conversion of an Existing Stone House in Mani
EXISTING BUILDING
The existing building is located on the outskirts of the beautiful village of Nomitsi, located on the western Mani, south of Stoupa. The building is in its shell state.
The large main room, measuring approximately 70 m², is to be converted and become the centre of the home.
All uses, such as living, cooking, dining, sleeping, and bathroom, are to be accommodated here. From the terrace, there is an incredible panoramic view of the sea.
Concept
The room is divided into two areas: the central living space and ancillary rooms.
The opening to the terrace will be enlarged, as to fit better with the proportions of the central, square living space. This gives the room a clear orientation and natural light.
The room is intended to be perceived as a whole, despite the separate ancillary rooms. The ancillary rooms and storage space, constructed from a lightweight material, stand within the space like a piece of furniture.
Main Level
The central living space, with its open-plan kitchen and living/dining area, faces west toward the terrace and the endless sea views. The existing ceiling height is insufficient to create a conventional gallery.
Therefore, certain areas such as the closet and sleeping alcove are slightly lower to allow for a shorter flight of stairs and good ceiling height on the gallery. The sleeping area is an open but enclosed box with a height of 2.20 meters.
The bathroom and toilet are floor-to-ceiling. To save space, sliding doors are installed in the wooden walls. Both rooms are wheelchair accessible.
Gallery
The gallery provides an additional space that can be used as a cosy area for reading, watching TV, or for guests to stay overnight. The railings are transparent to emphasize the overall openness of the space.
